Enchantress Undercover (Arcane Artisans #1) by A.C. Spahn

Adrienne Morales is a woman in hiding. After escaping from a dangerous cult of enchanters she is lying low in a city ruled by voids, people immune to magic, she uses her magic only when the pressure becomes too much. When a fire-breathing human covered in enchantments burns down her shop, she must stop him. Unfortunately for her the owner of the store witnesses everything and as it turns out he is a void. Adrienne has just revealed herself to the agency who controls the paranormal. What’s more, there is another rogue enchantress out there whose magic is out of control, and the agency believes it’s Adrienne harming humans.

I was surprisingly drawn into this book. I had become slightly bored with the repetitive nature of the urban fantasy trope where the heroine who is in hiding from her past and her eccentric friends and a love interest help her save the world, but this book brings a fresh perspective to magic and its origins. While it does follow the trope exactly, there is enough world-building to make it stand out. Fast-paced and full of funny, engaging characters this is an excellent start to a new series. One that I will be following eagerly.

I received an arc of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review all thoughts and opinions are my own.
