Philip Flagstaff is the new Earl of Cumberland after his older brother Robert dies to save Philip on the battlefield. Wracked by guilt, he vows to never marry and have children so that a more deserving person may hold the title.
Rose Deverill, is happy to be a widow and vows never to marry again. known as the “Wicked Widow” Rose has had several lovers since her husband’s death. She started an affair with the Philip which has lasted for several years, far longer than any of her other flings.
Philip holds true to his resolve, wanting to continue his affair with Rose but she begins to want marriage and children – with him.
I found this to be an enjoyable read, the characters are well developed and there is enough intrigue to keep it interesting.
